Principal’s message:

We welcome all visitors to our site.  I am proud to be part of a school that has dedicated staff and great students.
We have high expectations of our students academically and socially.  We take pride in providing quality learning experiences for our students.  Our school has an emphasis on Literacy and Numeracy and we have an Integrated Curriculum programme that encourages deeper thinking skills.

Kaniere School is a 6 teacher school in a semi-rural setting 4 km east of Hokitika.  Currently pupils come from Kaniere, Lake Kaniere Road, Rimu, Southside, Hokitika, Blue Spur, north of Hokitika, and 3 Mile.  We have an enrolment scheme in place, for further details see our enrolment scheme page.

Kaniere School has a family atmosphere.  A special feature of the school is the fostering of a charing and sharing attitude amongst the pupils and wider school community.  The parents expectation of the school is that it will provide a warm and caring environment in which their children will receive an excellent all round education.

The grounds are spacious and attractive with well established trees giving natural shade area.  There is a large playground with soft-fall matting, a large shade covered sandpit, two great playing fields and all-weather turf court area.

Our three classroom blocks have well covered verandahs, which are ideal for outside activities and wet lunchtimes. Two classroom were upgraded in 2015.

The school is supported by an active Board of Trustees and Home and School Association.  There is a close liaison between the school and its community.

From 2016 Kaniere School is a digital school.  All students in Year 3 and above will need to purchase a chrome book through the school.

We are very proud to have earned a Bronze Enviroschools Award.

We are the first school on the West Coast to be awarded this.

The certificate celebrates all that has been achieved in our Enviroschool journey so far.  We have committed ourselves to the journey and laid the foundations.  We are exploring opportunities for integrating the Enviroschools kaupapa.  We can show changes in our practices and have taken some steps towards being a sustainable school community.

The Enviroschools Programme aims to integrate environmental education into the whole of school life and to create learning opportunities by working towards a healthy, peaceful and sustainable environment.

All children are involved in improving areas of the school. They learn to care for and respect their environment.

Interested students meet on a regular basis to discuss environmental issues effecting the school. Ideas for projects are developed and children take part in carrying these out.
